Epididymal Secretory Protein E1 (NPC2) is a secreted protein that belongs to the NPC2 family. NPC2 is involved in the regulation of the lipid composition of sperm membranes during the maturation in the epididymis. NPC2 may regulate the transport of cholesterol through the late endosomal/lysosomal system. Defects in NPC2 are the cause of Niemann-Pick disease type C2, which affects the viscera and the central nervous system.

FGF-12 lacks the N-terminal signal sequence present in most of the FGF family members, but it contains clusters of basic residues that have been demonstrated to act as a nuclear localization signal. When transfectedinto mammalian cells, this protein accumulated in the nucleus, but was not secreted. The specific function of this gene has not yet been determined. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been reported.
